Program Objectives & Strategic Value
The CIHR Canada Postdoctoral Research Award aims to foster world-class health research expertise across Canada. By providing competitive direct stipend support, the program empowers researchers to:
Develop advanced, independent research programs in priority health domains.
Access state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, specialized patient cohorts, and health databases.
Strengthen interdisciplinary networks with clinical researchers, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, and health policy leaders.
Prepare for faculty positions, clinical research directorships, or senior research roles in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
Financial Package & Fellow Benefits
Recipients of the CIHR CPRA receive a comprehensive financial award designed to support full-time research commitment:
Annual Stipend: CAD $70,000 per year distributed in regular installments over 2 years (24 months).
Research Independence: Holding an individual CPRA award provides portable funding, allowing you to choose your host supervisor and lead your own research questions.
Institutional & Clinical Access: Awardees gain access to affiliated research hospitals, clinical trial units, and specialized university laboratories across Canada or internationally.
Professional Development: Opportunities to present findings at major scientific congresses, file health technology patents, and mentor graduate students and clinical trainees.
Eligible Health Research Pillars & Disciplinary Scope
To qualify for CIHR funding, your proposed project must align with one or more of CIHR's four core health research themes:
Pillar 2: Clinical Research: Diagnosis, disease treatment, medical devices, clinical trial design, patient-oriented outcomes, and surgical innovation.
Pillar 3: Health Systems & Services Research: Healthcare policy, health economics, hospital management, digital health infrastructure, accessibility, and quality of care.
Pillar 4: Social, Cultural, Environmental & Population Health: Epidemiology, public health policy, social determinants of health, global health equity, and Indigenous health research.
Mandate Note: Projects focusing strictly on natural sciences, engineering without direct health outcomes, or non-health social sciences must be submitted to NSERC or SSHRC respectively.
Detailed Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must satisfy all CIHR and CPRA administrative conditions as of the official application deadline:
1. Educational Background
Applicants must hold, or be in the final year of completing, a PhD or a recognized Health Professional (HP) or Allied Health Professional (AHP) degree (e.g., MD, DDS, PharmD, DVM, DNP) before taking up the award.
2. Doctoral / Degree Completion Window
Candidates must have completed all requirements for their degree no more than 36 months (3 years) prior to September 1 of the application year.
Extensions to Eligibility Window: CIHR allows formal extensions for documented career disruptions, including:
Parental leave or primary caregiving after child birth or adoption (extended up to 3 years).
Non-research clinical training (e.g., medical residency or clinical fellowship).
Extended medical leave, illness, or family responsibilities.
Mandatory military service or severe disruptions due to war/disaster.
3. Citizenship & Location of Tenure Rules
Canadian Citizens / Permanent Residents / Protected Persons: May hold the award at an eligible Canadian university/hospital or an eligible international research institution (if the doctoral degree was earned in Canada).
International Applicants: Eligible if currently registered in or completed a PhD/HP degree at a Canadian institution, or if currently conducting postdoctoral research at a Canadian institution. International awardees must hold the CPRA at an eligible Canadian host institution.
4. Limits & Exclusions
Maximum of 3 lifetime applications to the CPRA program.
Applicants cannot hold a tenured or tenure-track faculty position simultaneously.
You cannot hold a CPRA concurrently with another federal tri-agency award (such as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship).
Required Document Checklist
Applications must be submitted electronically via ResearchNet. The following materials are required:
ResearchNet Application Modules: Personal details, primary research location, institutional paid designation, and ethical certifications.
Academic CV (CIHR CCV Validation): Formatted via the Canadian Common CV portal, highlighting academic history, honors, and distinctions.
Most Significant Contributions (Up to 3 Items): A narrative description detailing up to 3 major research contributions (publications, clinical guidelines, datasets, patents, community interventions) and your exact role/impact.
Detailed Research Proposal (Summary & Project Documents): Clear presentation of background, scientific rationale, hypotheses, methodology, sex and gender considerations, and expected impact.
Sex and Gender-Based Analysis Plus (SGBA+) Certificate: Mandatory document demonstrating completion of CIHR's online training modules on integrating sex/gender into health research.
Institutional Nomination & Fulfillment of Degree Form: Official confirmation of degree completion date or expected defense date from your issuing university.
Supervisor Support & Research Environment Statement: Detailed letter from the proposed host supervisor evaluating laboratory capacity, equipment, patient access, and mentorship plan.
Two Confidential Sponsor/Referee Assessments: Submitted directly through ResearchNet by academic or clinical references.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Follow these key steps to prepare and submit your application on time:
Step 1: Secure a Host Supervisor & Institution
Connect with a lead investigator at an eligible Canadian university, research hospital, or international center. Gain agreement on your research direction and access to facilities.
Step 2: Register Accounts on ResearchNet and CCV
Create an account on ResearchNet and obtain a CIHR PIN. Register on the Canadian Common CV (CCV) portal and select the CIHR Academic CV template.
Step 3: Complete the Canadian Common CV
Fill in your publications, presentations, and awards on the CCV portal. Generate the confirmation number and link it to your ResearchNet CPRA application.
Step 4: Draft Proposal & SGBA+ Component
Develop your research project alongside your host supervisor. Explicitly address how biological sex and socio-cultural gender factors are integrated into your study design.
Step 5: Request Sponsor Letters & Institutional Approval
Input your referees' details into ResearchNet early. If holding the award at a Canadian university, route your application for institutional electronic approval (e-approval) prior to the university deadline.
Step 6: Final Electronic Submission
Verify that all uploaded PDF documents strictly comply with CIHR formatting guidelines. Submit the completed dossier through ResearchNet.
CIHR evaluates applications using a 50/50 weighted matrix aligned with the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), placing equal emphasis on quality over pure journal metrics:
1. Research Potential and Experience of the Applicant (50%)
Quality and real-world impact of past contributions (publications, clinical practices, open science datasets, mentorship).
Honours, awards, and academic distinctions relative to career stage.
Sponsor assessment ratings of leadership, autonomy, and critical thinking.
2. Quality of the Proposed Research Program & Training Environment (50%)
Originality, scientific merit, feasibility, and technical rigor of the proposed project.
Rigor of the Sex and Gender-Based Analysis Plus (SGBA+) integration.
Quality of the host laboratory environment, supervisor mentorship track record, and professional growth plan.
Scoring Scale: Reviewers score applications on a 0.0 to 4.9 scale, with scores of 3.5 and above considered eligible for funding.
Expert Tips for a Successful CIHR CPRA Application
Prioritize SGBA+ Integration: Explicitly explain how biological sex variables (e.g., cell line sex, animal models) and socio-cultural gender variables affect your scientific research hypothesis.
Emphasize DORA-Aligned Contributions: Clearly describe the real-world impact of your top 3 research outputs rather than relying solely on journal impact factors.
Articulate Research Independence: Show how the proposed fellowship project pushes your skills beyond your PhD or clinical residency work.
Start Institutional Approval Early: Canadian host institutions enforce internal deadlines up to 1–2 weeks prior to the national CIHR closing date.
