Comprehensive Scholarship Benefits

The Honjo Scholarship provides continuous monthly financial stipends based on the standard duration of the degree program:

1. Short-Term Graduate Programs (1–2 Years): ¥230,000 per month.
2. Standard Doctoral Programs (3 Years): ¥210,000 per month.
3. Extended Graduate Programs (Longer than 3 Years): ¥180,000 per month.
4. Duration of Support: Paid every month throughout the minimum period officially required to complete the degree.
5. Alumni & Networking Access: Membership in the Honjo Foundation alumni network and participation in international friendship activities.

Detailed Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Honjo International Scholarship for 2027, candidates must satisfy the following conditions:

1. Nationality & Citizenship

• Must hold foreign citizenship (non-Japanese citizens).

2. Age Limits at Program Start

• Master’s Program Applicants: Must be 30 years old or younger at the start of the Master’s degree course.
• Doctoral (PhD) Program Applicants: Must be 35 years old or younger at the start of the PhD degree course.

3. Enrollment Status

• Must be currently enrolled in, or applying for admission to, a Master's or PhD program starting in April 2027 or Fall 2027 at a Japanese graduate school.
• Applicants residing outside Japan are fully eligible provided they have secured or are in the process of applying for university admission.
• Degree course duration must be longer than 12 months.

4. Language & Career Commitment

• Japanese Proficiency: Candidates must possess basic conversational Japanese skills, as interview examinations are conducted in Japanese.
• Career Goals: Must demonstrate a strong intention to pursue a future career serving their home country.
• Foundation Engagement: Willingness to participate in foundation events and engage with its alumni network.

Required Application Documents

Applicants must submit all materials electronically via the Honjo Foundation online portal before the deadline. Required items include:

• Research Proposal: Completed using the designated Honjo template (written in Japanese).
• Two-Minute Research Video: A compulsory 2-minute video recording where the applicant explains their proposed research plan.
• Self-Promotion Video (Optional): A 30-second video clip highlighting personal strengths or achievements.
• Academic Transcripts: Complete official transcripts from undergraduate and previous graduate institutions (in Japanese or English).
• Proof of Admission/Enrollment: Official acceptance letter, student enrollment certificate, or proof of application to a Japanese graduate school.
• Identification & Photo: Passport copy and a digital face photograph (max 500 KB).

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Secure University Admission: Identify an eligible Master's or PhD program at a Japanese university and apply for admission.
2. Prepare Video & Research Proposal: Download the designated research proposal template and record your 2-minute research presentation video.
3. Complete Online Application: Access the Honjo online application system between 1 September and 31 October 2026.
4. Submit Application: Complete all form fields, upload required PDFs and video files, and finalize submission before 31 October 2026 (10:00 PM JST).
5. Save Registration PDF: Save the generated application PDF and registration number for tracking screening results.

Selection Milestones & Key Dates
