About This Scholarship
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate scholarship programme established to support talented young Africans who want to develop their academic abilities and contribute meaningfully to society. Beyond financial assistance, the programme combines postgraduate education with a structured leadership development experience grounded in reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship and leadership.
For the 2028 cohort, successful applicants can pursue a one-year Honours degree or a Master’s degree lasting up to two years at a recognised South African institution. Applicants may choose a field of study that aligns with their academic interests and career goals, provided they meet the requirements of their intended university programme.
The scholarship is particularly suited to candidates who demonstrate academic excellence, integrity, initiative and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Applicants should be prepared to reflect on their leadership, learn from people with different perspectives and participate fully in the Foundation’s leadership programme.
What the scholarship covers
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship provides financial support for the core costs associated with the approved postgraduate degree. The package includes:
- Tuition and university registration fees.
- An allowance for study materials.
- Accommodation and meal allowances.
- A medical aid allowance.
- A personal allowance.
- Research and conference grants, which may be available on request.
- Economy-class travel between the scholar’s home country and South African university at the beginning and end of the degree.
The scholarship does not cover every possible expense. University application fees, South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) verification costs where required, and visa application expenses are not covered by the Foundation. Applicants should check the official terms for the full list of exclusions and conditions.
Who can apply?
The scholarship is intended for young African citizens who have strong academic records and demonstrate potential to become ethical, thoughtful leaders. Applicants can be living or studying in any country, but the funded degree must be undertaken at a recognised institution in South Africa.
The programme is open to candidates from a wide range of academic disciplines. However, applicants must independently secure admission to an eligible Honours or Master’s programme and meet the university’s academic and qualification requirements.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants should meet the following criteria for the Class of 2028:
- Be a citizen of an African country.
- Be between 19 and 29 years old in the year of application, subject to the Foundation’s age rules.
- Be able to undertake written and spoken academic work in English at postgraduate level.
