About This PhD and Research Opportunity
The ESO Studentship Programme Europe allows doctoral researchers to spend part of their PhD at the European Southern Observatory headquarters in Garching, Germany, while remaining enrolled at their home university.
This is not a separate three-year PhD programme. Instead, students continue working toward their doctoral degree through their home university while spending one to two years at ESO developing an agreed research project with an ESO staff astronomer.
The arrangement provides a direct connection between the student's home research group and ESO. The PhD remains under the formal supervision of the home university supervisor, while an ESO staff astronomer provides co-supervision during the studentship.
ESO describes the programme as a way of connecting PhD students and their supervisors with the organisation's scientific activities, people and facilities. Students become part of an international research environment involving astronomers, fellows, engineers and other researchers.
Research Environment
Research at ESO covers a broad range of astronomical and astrophysical subjects. Current ESO research topics include areas such as:
- Planet formation and exoplanets
- Stellar evolution
- Interstellar medium and star formation
- Galaxies and active galactic nuclei
- Galaxy formation and evolution
- Cosmology and the high-redshift Universe
- Observational astronomy
- Astronomical instrumentation and technology
- Astronomical data analysis
Applicants should examine the research interests and available thesis topics of ESO staff members before preparing their proposed project.
A Key Requirement: ESO Supervisor
Applicants are strongly encouraged to establish contact with a suitable ESO staff astronomer before applying.
The proposed studentship project should be developed jointly by the applicant, the home university supervisor and the prospective ESO supervisor. The project should explain what will be done at ESO, how it fits into the overall PhD research programme and what additional value the period at ESO will provide.
This makes the studentship different from a standard scholarship application where the applicant simply applies for funding. The research project and supervision arrangement are important parts of the application.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled in, or be about to commence, a PhD programme in astronomy or a related scientific field at an external university.
- Have a doctoral research project compatible with the scientific activities at ESO.
- Have a home-university supervisor responsible for the overall PhD.
