University of Oxford DPhil in Population Health 2027: Entry Requirements & Supervisor Strategy
The DPhil in Population Health at the University of Oxford is a 3- to 4-year doctoral research degree offered by Oxford Population Health (Nuffield Department of Population Health). The program focuses on multi-disciplinary research across epidemiology, biostatistics, global health, health economics, and disease prevention.
1. Mandatory Step: Securing Prospective Supervisor Agreement
Unlike many standard graduate applications, Oxford Population Health requires applicants to secure supervisor support prior to formal submission:
- Identify a Project or Supervisor: Browse the department's advertised DPhil projects or select an academic whose research aligns with your proposal.
- Submit the Contact Form: Download and complete the official Prospective Supervisor Contact Form from the department website.
- Send Direct Inquiry: Email the form and a concise cover note to the prospective supervisor.
- Secure Consent: You must receive approval in principle from the supervisor before finalizing your formal Oxford graduate portal application.
2. Annual Tuition Fees & Cost Breakdown (2027/2028 Intake)
Course fees are billed annually by the University of Oxford:
- UK Home Students: £10,940 per year
- Overseas / International Students: £36,260 per year
- Living Costs (Oxford Estimate): ~£1,425 to £2,035 per month to cover accommodation, food, and study expenses.
Note: International candidates must also account for UK Student Visa fees and the NHS Immigration Health Surcharge.
3. Scholarships & Fully-Funded Opportunities
Complete applications submitted by the December deadline are automatically considered for Oxford's central and departmental scholarship pools:
- Clarendon Fund Scholarships: Covers full course fees and a living stipend for top international and Home applicants.
- Oxford Population Health Scholarships: Departmental awards providing full tuition and a maintenance stipend for 3 years.
- Medical Research Council (MRC) & Grand Union DTP (ESRC): UKRI-funded studentships covering fees and standard UKRI stipends.
