About This Grant
The PIH Africa Research Grant for Final-Year Pharmacy Students is a research funding initiative designed to help undergraduate pharmacy students in Nigeria complete meaningful final-year research and develop their work towards publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Final-year research can be an important opportunity for pharmacy students to investigate practical problems affecting patients, medicine use and healthcare delivery. However, research expenses—including laboratory consumables, data collection, ethical review and statistical analysis—can make it difficult to complete a project or prepare a manuscript for publication.
Through its first-edition grant programme, PIH Africa is offering two awards of ₦250,000 each to support eligible student-led projects with a clear connection to improving health outcomes or healthcare services.
The programme places particular emphasis on research that can generate useful evidence for the Nigerian healthcare setting. Potential areas include antimicrobial resistance, rational medicine use, medication safety, access to affordable medicines, community pharmacy practice, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, chronic disease management and digital health.
The grant is intended to support research that is already underway or about to begin, rather than projects that have completed data collection. Successful applicants must also work towards publishing their findings, with the student serving as first author.
What the grant can support
Eligible expenses may include research data collection, laboratory consumables, research assistance, ethics fees, analysis software, article-processing charges and conference registration.
The award does not cover tuition, personal upkeep or supervisor honoraria. Applicants should therefore prepare a realistic research budget that identifies the costs directly necessary to complete the project.
Why this opportunity matters
Beyond the financial award, the programme encourages students to approach their final-year projects as potential contributions to scientific knowledge and healthcare improvement. A well-designed project may help a student build experience in research methods, evidence-based pharmacy practice, scientific writing and publication.
Applicants should ensure that their proposed research question is sufficiently focused, that the methods are appropriate for answering it, and that the project can be completed within the available resources and timeline.
How to Prepare a Strong Research Grant Application
1. Start with a focused, answerable research question.
Avoid proposals that attempt to investigate too many problems at once. Identify one specific question that can be answered using the time, methods and resources available for your final-year project. Explain why the answer matters for patients, medicine use, healthcare delivery or public health in Nigeria.
2. Demonstrate the practical value of the research.
