About This Grant
The 2026 EuroHPC Matching Funds Call is a research funding opportunity administered by the Research Council of Finland for Finnish research organisations whose subprojects have already received funding through European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) calls.
The purpose of the funding is to cover the Finnish research organisation's required 50% self-financing contribution for an eligible EuroHPC JU-funded subproject. The Research Council of Finland has allocated up to €3.5 million for the call.
EuroHPC JU is a European initiative aimed at developing a world-class high-performance computing ecosystem by bringing together European and national resources and strengthening access to advanced computing infrastructure. Its objectives include developing future computing capabilities and expertise, expanding the use of high-performance computing into new areas, promoting national and international research cooperation and supporting access to high-quality research and computing infrastructures.
This RCF call therefore operates as a matching-funds mechanism, rather than as an independent grant for researchers who simply need access to a supercomputer.
Who Can Apply
The call is specifically for applicants who:
Are based at a Finnish research organisation.
Have already received funding for an eligible subproject through a EuroHPC JU call.
Need the Finnish research organisation's matching contribution for that EuroHPC-funded project.
Meet the Research Council of Finland's funding conditions.
Eligible applicants are therefore not researchers applying for EuroHPC funding for the first time through this RCF call.
The funding is applied for by the Finnish research organisation. Where a EuroHPC consortium contains several Finnish parties, each Finnish party submits its own application for its respective subproject.
The research organisation selects the person responsible for the application. That person is responsible for the application and project on behalf of the organisation.

The Research Council of Finland is prepared to provide up to €3.5 million in total under this call.
The RCF funding is intended to cover the Finnish subproject's 50% self-financing contribution required under the relevant EuroHPC JU funding decision.
The amount requested from the Research Council of Finland should therefore correspond to the amount of EuroHPC JU funding allocated to the Finnish subproject.
For example, where the EuroHPC JU decision establishes a Finnish subproject's total project costs and requires a 50% self-financing contribution, the RCF matching funding is intended to cover that Finnish contribution, subject to the RCF's funding conditions.
Funding Period
Projects may receive RCF funding for a maximum of five years, with the actual funding period determined by the funding period specified in the relevant EuroHPC JU funding decision.
The RCF funding is granted to the Finnish site of research, normally a university, research institute or another eligible Finnish research organisation.
Research Areas and High-Performance Computing
EuroHPC funding supports research and development involving advanced computing infrastructure across a wide range of scientific and technological fields.
Potential applications of high-performance computing can include:
Artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Climate and environmental modelling.
Computational biology and life sciences.
Materials science.
Engineering and numerical simulation.
Large-scale data analysis.
Energy research.
Digital research.
Optimisation and complex mathematical modelling.
Computational social sciences and humanities.
Interdisciplinary computational research.
However, the relevance of these areas does not by itself make a project eligible for this particular RCF call. The critical requirement is that the Finnish subproject has already received funding through an eligible EuroHPC JU call.
EuroHPC Research Environment
EuroHPC JU aims to strengthen Europe's high-performance computing ecosystem by developing advanced computing infrastructure and related expertise.
High-performance computing can allow research teams to perform calculations, simulations and data analyses on a scale that may not be practical using conventional computing infrastructure.
Depending on the project, such resources may support large-scale simulations, complex numerical calculations, machine-learning workloads, processing of very large datasets and other computationally intensive research tasks.
The broader EuroHPC ecosystem also promotes international cooperation and the development of research expertise around advanced computing technologies.
Important Eligibility Requirement
This is an invited-applicant call.
Researchers and institutions should therefore not treat it as an open funding opportunity for any team that wants to obtain EuroHPC resources.
To be eligible, the applicant must be connected to a Finnish research organisation and the relevant Finnish subproject must already have received funding through a EuroHPC JU call.
Applicants should confirm their invitation and eligibility status before preparing the RCF application.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
Be based at an eligible Finnish research organisation.
Be connected to a Finnish subproject that has received funding through a EuroHPC JU call.
Apply for funding to cover the Finnish subproject's 50% self-financing contribution.
Meet the Research Council of Finland's applicable eligibility and funding conditions.
Submit the application through the RCF online application system.
Provide the required documentation relating to the EuroHPC JU funding decision.
Meet the applicable research integrity, research security, responsible science and administrative requirements.
Ensure that the application relates specifically to the eligible EuroHPC-funded subproject.
The RCF will not process an application if the applicant or application does not meet the competence, eligibility or other key requirements of the call.
Benefits
The funding provides:
Up to €3.5 million in total RCF funding across the call.
Matching funding for the Finnish 50% self-financing contribution of eligible EuroHPC JU-funded subprojects.
Support for participation in European high-performance computing research activities.
Funding for eligible research project costs in accordance with the EuroHPC JU decision and RCF funding terms.
The possibility of supporting projects for up to five years, subject to the applicable EuroHPC JU funding period.
Access to a European research environment built around advanced high-performance computing.
Support for research using advanced computational infrastructure.
Opportunities to strengthen Finnish participation in international high-performance computing research.
Application Requirements
The application consists of an online application form and required PDF appendices.
Applicants must provide information including:
Personal and responsible-applicant details.
Site of research.
Research infrastructure information.
Project subject and disciplines.
Research keywords.
Project funding information.
Commitment by the site of research.
Public project description.
Research security assessment.
Responsible-science implementation description.
The application previously submitted to the relevant EuroHPC JU call.
The final signed EuroHPC JU funding decision from the European Commission.
The research security assessment is an obligatory appendix.
The description of responsible science is also obligatory. It should explain how good scientific practice, gender equality, nondiscrimination, open access and responsible research-data management will be addressed during the project.
For consortium subprojects, certain appendices are submitted jointly by the relevant Finnish subprojects.
Research Security and Responsible Science
The RCF requires applicants to identify and assess risks related to research security and, where necessary, provide an appropriate risk-management plan.
Applicants must also explain in the research plan how good scientific practice will be followed, how gender equality and nondiscrimination will be promoted, and how the RCF's requirements concerning open access and responsible research-data management will be implemented.
These requirements form part of the conditions for the processing and awarding of funding.
Funding Plan
In the application's funding section, the Finnish subproject's self-financing contribution should be entered according to the relevant EuroHPC JU decision.
The amount requested from the Research Council of Finland is therefore the amount corresponding to the EuroHPC JU funding allocated to the Finnish subproject.
The RCF funding cannot be used for economic activity.
The Finnish research organisation must also provide the project with the necessary basic research facilities, such as premises, equipment, computing equipment and telecommunications and library services appropriate to the research.
Application Process
Eligible invited applicants should:
Confirm that their Finnish subproject has received EuroHPC JU funding.
Confirm that they are applying through an eligible Finnish research organisation.
Review the relevant EuroHPC JU funding decision and identify the required Finnish self-financing contribution.

Submit the complete application through the RCF online services before the deadline.
Applications can be edited and supplemented until the deadline, but the deadline itself is non-negotiable.
Application Deadline
14 October 2026 at 23:59 Finnish time
The Research Council of Finland states that applications submitted after the deadline will not be processed. Applicants are therefore advised to submit well before the closing time.
Important: Not a Conventional Scholarship
This opportunity should not be presented as a scholarship for students or as general funding for researchers who want to study or conduct computational research in Finland.
It is specifically a research organisation-level matching-funds call for Finnish subprojects that have already received EuroHPC JU funding.
Researchers who have not received funding through an eligible EuroHPC JU call should not assume that they can apply through this particular opportunity.
