About This Fellowship
The OREF Michael P. Kelly Sr. Leadership Fellowship Program is a one-year professional development programme for early-career orthopaedic professionals who intend to build research-focused careers and develop the leadership skills needed to contribute to the orthopaedic research community.
The fellowship is designed around the idea that successful research careers require more than technical and scientific expertise. Participants develop leadership attributes that can help them work effectively with research teams, communicate ideas, make decisions, organise projects and contribute to the wider orthopaedic community.
OREF identifies integrity, selflessness, decisiveness, organization, benevolence, vision, communication and innovation among the attributes emphasized by the fellowship.
The programme is therefore particularly relevant to orthopaedic residents and other early-career professionals who see research as an important part of their future career and want structured development in leadership alongside their scientific interests.
The fellowship also contributes to OREF's broader goal of developing the next generation of orthopaedic clinician-scientists and research leaders. OREF states that its selection process for the Michael P. Kelly Sr. Leadership Fellowship prioritizes women and underrepresented minorities.
Who Is Eligible?
The fellowship is intended for early-career members of the orthopaedic profession at defined stages of training or practice. The current OREF announcement identifies:
- Orthopaedic residents in PGY3–PGY5
- Orthopaedic fellows
- Orthopaedic surgeons who have been in practice for less than two years
Applicants should also have a clear career interest in orthopaedic clinical research and an interest in developing as leaders within the orthopaedic community.
Because OREF funding programmes can have programme-specific eligibility conditions, applicants should review the current fellowship announcement and application instructions for the complete requirements before submitting an application.
What the Fellowship Develops
The programme focuses on leadership qualities that are directly relevant to careers involving research, clinical practice and professional service.
Areas emphasized by OREF include:
Integrity — developing professional conduct and responsible leadership.
Selflessness and service — understanding leadership as a contribution to colleagues, patients and the wider profession.
Decisiveness — developing the ability to make informed decisions in professional and research environments.
