About This Fellowship
The ICGEB South African Women in Biotechnology Programme (SAWBP) PhD Fellowship supports South African women researchers who intend to undertake doctoral research in biotechnology at the ICGEB Cape Town Component.
The programme is designed to strengthen participation and research capacity among South African women in biotechnology while providing doctoral researchers with access to an established international scientific environment.
Successful fellows conduct their research within an ICGEB Cape Town laboratory and work with experienced scientists on innovative projects aligned with the research expertise available at the Component. The programme combines doctoral research with practical exposure to advanced biotechnology methods, scientific collaboration, mentoring and professional development.
The SAWBP is part of ICGEB's broader effort to develop scientific capacity and encourage interaction between South African researchers and the wider international ICGEB community.
Research Areas
The 2027 doctoral call specifically identifies five ICGEB Cape Town macro areas:
- Infectious Diseases
- Non-Communicable Diseases
- Bioinformatics
- Plant Systems Biology
- Virology
The proposed PhD project must be innovative and fall within one of these areas.
This means applicants should not submit a generic biotechnology proposal without first checking whether their proposed research fits the scientific activities of an appropriate ICGEB Cape Town laboratory.
Research Environment
ICGEB Cape Town provides a research environment in which doctoral fellows can work alongside established scientists and participate in active biotechnology and life-science research.
Depending on the selected research group, doctoral work may involve molecular and cellular biology, pathogen research, virology, computational approaches, plant systems biology, disease-related research or other techniques relevant to the group's scientific programme.
The precise methods and facilities available to a fellow will depend on the selected laboratory and research project.
Mandatory Group Leader Endorsement
One of the most important application requirements is the endorsement from an ICGEB Cape Town Group Leader.
Applicants must contact the Group Leader of the laboratory they wish to join before applying and discuss their proposed doctoral research project.
A written statement from the Group Leader who is willing to support the proposed project is mandatory for the application.
This means applicants should identify a suitable research group early rather than preparing a proposal independently and attempting to find a supervisor after submission.
