About This Fellowship
Why do plants respond differently to environmental changes, and how can scientists uncover the mechanisms responsible for growth, development and adaptation? Answering questions like these often requires researchers to combine biological investigation with techniques from other scientific disciplines.
The Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Plant Biology support early-career scientists investigating fundamental questions about how plants work. The programme is particularly interested in bringing new scientific perspectives into plant research, creating opportunities for collaboration between plant biologists and researchers trained in areas such as chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics and computational modelling.
For example, a plant physiologist might collaborate with a computational scientist to develop a model explaining patterns of plant development. A chemist might investigate the molecular signals involved in plant growth, while an engineer could develop new approaches for measuring biological processes. These are illustrative possibilities rather than prescribed projects; applicants must establish their own research questions and demonstrate how their proposed work advances fundamental plant biology.
The programme offers two main pathways: plant scientists can acquire expertise from another discipline, or researchers trained in other fields can apply their existing skills to plant biology. Applicants may propose one or two mentors, provided the arrangement meets the programme's requirements.
For researchers who want to build a career around fundamental scientific questions rather than remain within a single disciplinary approach, the fellowship offers an opportunity to develop new expertise while pursuing a substantial research project.
Who Can Apply?
The fellowship welcomes qualified applicants from the United States and other countries. It is designed for researchers who have completed doctoral training or will complete it before the fellowship begins.
Applicants should meet these principal conditions:
- Hold a PhD or equivalent qualification, or expect to receive it by the fellowship start date.
- Have received their doctoral degree no earlier than three years before the December 3, 2026 application deadline.
- Identify an eligible nonprofit research university or research institution in the United States to host the fellowship.
- Propose a project that fits one of the programme's interdisciplinary research pathways.
- Select a postdoctoral sponsor who is not their doctoral thesis adviser.
Applicants proposing two mentors must ensure that at least one conducts research in plant biology. A prospective sponsor may support only one applicant per application cycle.
Can Nigerian researchers apply?
Yes. The programme accepts international applicants, including eligible researchers from Nigeria. However, the award must be administered by an eligible U.S.-based nonprofit research university or research institution. Applicants should discuss supervision, institutional requirements and immigration arrangements with their prospective host before making relocation plans.
