About This Scholarship
The Institute of Science Tokyo in Japan offers the International Graduate Program A (IGP(A)), an English-language graduate programme spanning five curricular programmes across 14 departments. Students can pursue a master's degree or an integrated master's-doctoral programme, depending on the available course and their academic objectives. Lectures and seminars are conducted in English, and Japanese-language classes are available to help international students adapt to everyday life in Japan.
Outstanding international applicants to eligible programmes may be considered for a Japanese Government scholarship administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Applicants must request scholarship consideration as part of their IGP(A) application and satisfy the separate scholarship conditions.
Choosing the Right Study Route
IGP(A) offers two distinct academic routes:
- Master's programme: Designed for students seeking a master's degree.
- Integrated doctoral education programme: Combines master's and doctoral study, allowing eligible students to pursue both degrees over approximately three to five years.
The MEXT university-recommendation opportunity described in Science Tokyo's scholarship guidance applies to eligible integrated master's-doctoral programmes, not automatically to every IGP(A) master's programme. Applicants should therefore confirm both the degree structure and scholarship eligibility of their preferred programme before applying.
What the Scholarship Covers
Successful MEXT Scholarship recipients may receive the following benefits:
- Monthly stipend: JPY 147,000 during master's-level study and JPY 148,000 during doctoral-level study under the published guidance. Rates are subject to change.
- Tuition and enrolment fees: Waived by Science Tokyo.
- Travel expenses: Airfare to and from Japan, subject to MEXT's conditions.
- Possible doctoral-stage extension: Students admitted to an integrated doctoral programme may apply to extend their scholarship when progressing from the master's stage to doctoral study.
The initial scholarship period covers two years of master's study. Extension to the doctoral stage is not automatic. Science Tokyo's published guidance requires a master's-stage GPA of at least 2.50 on the specified 3.00 scale, along with other conditions. Only a limited number of students receive extensions.
The entrance examination application fee may be reimbursed if MEXT allocates the applicant to Science Tokyo. Applicants should check the current fee rules and should not assume that the scholarship will cover expenses incurred before selection.
Who Can Apply
