About This Scholarship
The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) for Neural Circuits and Behaviour at University College London (UCL) invites applications for its September 2027 PhD intake. Based in London, the centre investigates how the brain processes information and how neural circuits generate behaviour. Its research combines experimental neuroscience with quantitative, computational and interdisciplinary approaches.
The programme is designed for motivated graduates who want to develop into independent researchers. Students benefit from a collaborative research environment, access to specialist facilities and opportunities to learn from researchers working across neuroscience and related disciplines.
ABOUT THE RESEARCH CENTRE

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre is a neuroscience research centre at UCL supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the Wellcome Trust. Its research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying behaviour, including how animals perceive their environment, learn, make decisions and respond to changing conditions. Research combines experimental approaches with computational analysis to investigate brain function at the level of neural circuits.
PHD TRAINING AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
The advertised programme lasts four years. The initial training period introduces students to systems and theoretical neuroscience, research methods and relevant experimental techniques. Students undertake research rotations before progressing to a doctoral project. Later stages concentrate on original research, data analysis, scientific communication and thesis preparation.
Depending on the research project, students may develop skills in experimental design, quantitative analysis, programming, computational modelling, imaging, neural recording or other techniques relevant to the laboratory in which they work. Specific methods depend on the chosen project and supervisor.
FUNDING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The studentship provides full tuition-fee coverage for eligible successful candidates, including international students, an annual tax-free stipend of £30,839 and a budget for conference and workshop travel. The advertised award supports four years of doctoral training. Applicants should consult the official programme page for the full terms of funding and any conditions that apply.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have a strong academic background and a genuine interest in neuroscience or a related research area. Relevant backgrounds include neuroscience, biology and other life sciences, physics, mathematics and computer science. Applicants should be prepared for interdisciplinary research and should be able to explain how their previous studies or research experience relate to the programme.
Check the official website for the latest eligibility requirements, application instructions and deadlines.
