About This Scholarship
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science African Faculty Fellowship supports university faculty members and equivalent researchers in Africa who want to apply artificial intelligence methodologies to important scientific and engineering research questions.
The programme is designed to strengthen AI-enabled research capacity in Africa while creating long-term collaboration between African scientists and the University of Michigan.
The fellowship combines residential research experience at the University of Michigan with research and training activities in Africa. Fellows spend part of the programme in residence at the University of Michigan and another part in Africa carrying out research or training activities.
The programme is intended to help African researchers develop advanced skills in applying artificial intelligence to scientific research while building long-term international research collaborations.
Who Is This Fellowship For?
The fellowship is designed for African researchers working at the level of university faculty or in an equivalent research role within another African organisation.
It is particularly suitable for researchers who have an established scientific or engineering research background and want to incorporate artificial intelligence methods into their research.
Applicants should have a clearly defined scientific or engineering problem for which AI methodologies can provide meaningful research value.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
-
Be African researchers working at the level of university faculty or an equivalent role in another African organisation.
-
Have a strong research background in science or engineering.
-
Propose research that meaningfully applies artificial intelligence methodologies.
-
Have an appropriate doctoral qualification or equivalent research background.
-
Demonstrate strong research potential.
-
Propose research within an eligible scientific or engineering area.
-
Be able to participate in the programme's residential activities at the University of Michigan.
-
Be able to undertake the required research or training activities in Africa.
-
Provide the required research statement, curriculum vitae and supporting materials.
-
Meet any additional eligibility requirements specified by the fellowship programme.
