About This PhD and Research Opportunity
The University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a fully funded three-year PhD Scholarship as part of the research project “Forgetting Secrecy? Reconfiguring forgetting and secrecy in an age of AI” (ForSe). The position is based at the Department of Communication within the Faculty of Humanities and is scheduled to begin on February 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The PhD position is part of a research project funded by the Carlsberg Foundation through the Semper Ardens Accelerate programme. The project investigates how artificial intelligence is changing the conditions under which humans and societies understand concepts such as forgetting, secrecy, privacy and identity.
The project is particularly relevant to the growing debate surrounding artificial intelligence, large language models, deep neural networks, data collection, information storage and the ability of digital systems to retain and reveal information. While human beings naturally forget information and may deliberately keep information secret, many contemporary digital technologies are designed to store, process and retrieve enormous quantities of information. This creates important philosophical, ethical and social questions about what forgetting and secrecy mean in an increasingly AI-driven society.
The successful PhD candidate will conduct philosophical, conceptual and ethical investigations into the relationship between artificial intelligence, forgetting and secrecy. The research will contribute to the wider ForSe project and will examine questions surrounding how AI technologies influence human privacy, personhood, identity and information practices.
The candidate is expected to develop an independent and original PhD research project that contributes to the aims of the wider project. The research will work across two of the project's work packages and is expected to engage with questions concerning AI, secrecy, forgetting and intelligence practices.
The position is particularly suitable for applicants with an academic background in philosophy, philosophy of technology, philosophy of information, information ethics, intelligence studies, information studies or closely related disciplines. Applicants from related fields may also be considered where their academic background and proposed research demonstrate strong relevance to the project.
