About This PhD and Research Opportunity
The Computation and Cognition Tübingen Summer Internship (CaCTüS) is a three-month research programme for eligible bachelor's and master's students interested in artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuroscience, cognition and related scientific fields. The programme is jointly offered by the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Tübingen AI Center in Germany.
The initiative aims to help talented students develop their research careers, particularly those whose access to higher education and scientific opportunities has been limited by personal, financial, regional or societal barriers. Students from low- and middle-income countries that are underrepresented in the research community are especially encouraged to apply.
PROGRAMME DURATION AND LOCATION

The 2027 internship is scheduled to run from 1 July to 30 September 2027. It is an in-person, full-time research placement in the Tübingen research environment, with projects and placements determined by the participating research teams. Applicants should be available for the full programme period.
RESEARCH AREAS
Projects may cover machine learning, artificial intelligence, electrical engineering, theoretical neuroscience, behavioural experiments, cognitive science and data analysis. The specific projects available may vary, and applicants should review the official programme website for current project descriptions and relevant requirements.
FUNDING AND BENEFITS
The official programme describes the internship as fully funded. Selected interns receive a monthly salary of approximately €1,350, intended to cover living expenses, housing and health insurance. Travel costs are also compensated, and the programme coordination office arranges affordable accommodation. Visa application fees and related embassy travel expenses are not reimbursed. Applicants should read the official funding terms for details and any conditions.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should be enrolled at bachelor's or master's level, or meet the programme's stated provisions for recent graduates. They must not have started a PhD by the time the internship takes place. Students who have not yet completed their bachelor's degree must have completed at least four semesters, equivalent to two years of study, before the internship begins.
Candidates should have a strong academic record and a background relevant to the proposed projects. Relevant disciplines include computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience and related fields. The programme is particularly intended for students who face personal, financial, regional or societal obstacles to scientific development. Applicants should explain their circumstances honestly and follow the official eligibility guidance.
Check the official website for the latest eligibility requirements, application instructions and deadlines.
