About This PhD and Research Opportunity
The AI4D African Scholars Programme supports African researchers working on responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) research that addresses development challenges on the continent.
The programme is implemented through the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) and is supported by international development partners including the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Rather than supporting AI research purely as a technical exercise, the programme places emphasis on responsible and locally relevant AI. Research is expected to consider how AI can contribute to sustainable development while addressing issues such as inclusion, equity, ethics and the needs of African communities.
The programme has two main beneficiary categories: PhD scholars and Early Career Academics (ECAs).
PhD Scholarship
The PhD component supports African scholars who are already enrolled in a PhD programme at an eligible public university in Africa and whose research incorporates AI and/or Machine Learning.
This is not an entry-level PhD admission scholarship. Applicants must already have completed a master's degree, be enrolled in a PhD programme and have successfully defended their research proposal with faculty approval.
The programme is intended for scholars who have progressed beyond the initial proposal stage and are working on activities such as major research revisions, data collection, analysis or validation of results.
This distinction is important for prospective applicants: simply receiving admission into a PhD programme does not by itself satisfy the programme's requirements.
Early Career Academic Category
The second category supports Early Career Academics who have obtained their PhD within the relevant five-year eligibility period.
The ECA component is intended to strengthen the research and development capacity of African public universities in AI and Machine Learning.
An ECA recipient can also support up to two master's students as part of the research team. The research team is expected to contribute to AI-related work connected with responsible and development-focused applications.
Funding for equipment and institutional support under this category is directed to the university or supplier rather than being treated as personal income for the academic.
Research Focus
The programme does not require every applicant to be studying Computer Science as their primary discipline.
Research can come from other fields, particularly STEM disciplines, provided that the proposed research incorporates meaningful AI or Machine Learning components.
Potential research areas can include applications of AI to:
- Agriculture and food systems
- Healthcare and medical diagnostics
