As a fully distributed company operating across 70+ countries, Canonical offers a borderless work environment focused on technical excellence and engineering rigor.
Role Overview Canonical is seeking a talented Remote Software Engineer to join its Container Images Engineering team. In this role, you will design, package, build, and secure enterprise-grade container images deployed across cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and local developer workstations. You will work directly at the intersection of open-source software maintenance, vulnerability patching, and Linux kernel optimization.
Key Responsibilities

- Audit open-source software components for security vulnerabilities, applying security updates and upstream backports efficiently.
- Maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to automate image building, testing, and distribution.
- Collaborate with open-source communities, security research teams, and cloud engineering partners to establish modern container packaging standards.
- Write clear technical documentation, architectural blueprints, and user guides for container deployment.
Detailed Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience in Linux systems.
- Technical Experience: Demonstrable experience with containerization tools (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes) and container runtime security.
- Programming Skills: Strong proficiency in at least one modern language (Python, Go, or Rust) and shell scripting (Bash).
- Systems Proficiency: Deep understanding of Linux package management (Debian/Ubuntu
.debpackages), file systems, and system networking. - Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, essential for asynchronous collaboration across global time zones.
Compensation & Employee Benefits
- Competitive international salary benchmarked against top global tech employers.
- 100% remote flexibility with home office equipment setup allowance.
- USD $2,000 annual personal learning and professional development budget.
