About This Internship
The African Development Bank (AfDB) 2027 Internship Program is a structured professional placement for young graduates and master's students who want practical experience in African development, international finance, public policy and the technical areas that support the Bank's operations. The programme places interns within departments whose work contributes to the Bank's activities across African countries, giving participants an opportunity to understand how a major multilateral development institution develops, supports and manages development initiatives.
For Session 1 of the 2027 programme, the Bank plans to select 40 interns. Placements may be made at the Bank's headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, at regional or country offices, or remotely, depending on the requirements of the recruiting department. This distinction is important for applicants: being selected for the internship does not necessarily mean relocating to Abidjan, but candidates should be prepared for an on-site placement if their assigned department requires it.
The programme covers substantially more than conventional banking or economics roles. AfDB's work spans sectors such as agriculture and food systems, infrastructure, energy, climate and green growth, private-sector development, human capital, governance, finance, environmental and social safeguards, information technology, statistics, procurement, legal services, communication, monitoring and evaluation. Consequently, applicants from different academic backgrounds can be considered where their expertise corresponds to the work of a Bank department.
An intern's experience will depend on the department and assignment. Placements can expose participants to the professional processes behind development work, including research and analysis, preparation of technical or policy information, data and statistical work, project-related activities, financial or operational analysis, communication, monitoring and evaluation, institutional support, or other departmental responsibilities. Applicants should therefore think beyond the title "internship" and identify which AfDB work areas best match their academic training and practical skills.
The programme is particularly relevant to candidates interested in careers involving . Experience at the Bank can also help applicants understand how multidisciplinary teams contribute to large-scale development priorities across different African countries.
