About This Grant
The 2026 Modigliani Research Grant is a competitive research funding opportunity established by UniCredit Foundation in memory of Nobel Prize-winning economist Franco Modigliani. The programme is designed to support outstanding early-career researchers working in economics and finance and to encourage innovative research with the potential to contribute to academic knowledge.
The 2026 edition is the 17th edition of the Modigliani Research Grant. UniCredit Foundation will award four research grants to researchers of any nationality who are employed at eligible European universities located in countries where the UniCredit Group operates.
The programme is intended for researchers who are already working within an eligible university or academic research environment. It is therefore different from a conventional student scholarship: applicants are expected to be developing an independent research project in economics or finance rather than seeking general financial support for undergraduate or graduate study.
Each successful recipient will receive €25,000 gross per year. The grant may be renewed for a second year, providing a maximum total value of €50,000 gross per recipient. The maximum project duration is therefore two years. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
At least one of the four grants will be awarded to a female candidate, according to the 2026 official call. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
The grant is particularly relevant to early-career researchers who have developed an original research project and need dedicated support to advance the work. A competitive proposal should clearly establish the research question, explain the academic relevance of the project and demonstrate how the proposed research can contribute to the economics or finance literature.
Applicants should pay particular attention to the institutional eligibility requirement. Being an economist or finance researcher is not sufficient by itself. The applicant must be employed at an eligible European university situated in a country within the UniCredit Group's operating perimeter.
