About This Grant
The Yamagiwa-Yoshida Memorial International Cancer (YY) Study Grants provide established cancer researchers with an opportunity to undertake an international research visit and collaborate with researchers at a host institution in another country.
The programme is supported by the Japan National Committee for UICC and has operated since 1972. Over the years, the YY Study Grants have supported researchers from more than 40 countries, providing opportunities to exchange scientific knowledge, research techniques and professional experience through international collaboration. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
The 2026 programme is intended for researchers who are at least two years post-PhD and have an established publication record in cancer research. Eligible applicants can include researchers, clinicians, epidemiologists and public health professionals working in cancer-related research.
The grant enables a researcher to undertake a three-month research visit at an international host institution. The proposed project may involve basic, translational, public health or applied cancer research, making the programme relevant to a broad range of cancer research activities.
The international placement is particularly useful when the proposed research requires access to expertise, research techniques, technologies, facilities, datasets or other capabilities available at the host institution. The programme is structured around knowledge and skills exchange rather than simply providing funding for independent research carried out at the applicant's home institution.
Applicants should therefore identify an appropriate research collaborator and host institution and develop a project that has a clear reason for requiring international collaboration. The proposed visit should contribute to the applicant's research programme while also providing opportunities to acquire complementary skills and knowledge.
The maximum value of the grant is US$10,000. The current UICC information specifies a three-month visit, with a possible extension of up to two additional months where the fellow secures funding for the extension from another source and there is no additional cost to UICC. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
The YY Study Grant is not a clinical training fellowship. Its purpose is research collaboration, exchange of expertise and acquisition of research methods and techniques. Applicants should therefore present a research-focused project rather than a general clinical observership or training visit. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
Recent awardees have undertaken projects in areas including cancer survival, biomarker discovery, personalised treatment approaches, cancer genomics and other areas of cancer research. UICC has also awarded YY grants to researchers from countries including , demonstrating that the programme is accessible to qualified researchers from a wide range of countries. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}
