About This Grant
The Lisa Jardine Grant Scheme supports early-career scholars whose research would benefit from access to historical and archival collections, particularly where the project connects the humanities or arts with the natural sciences.
The scheme is named in memory of Professor Lisa Jardine CBE FRS, a historian of science whose work explored connections between science, culture and society. The Royal Society uses the scheme to encourage interdisciplinary research in intellectual history, history of science and related fields, while helping researchers access collections and develop international academic connections.
A central resource for the scheme is the Royal Society's Library and archive collections in London. These contain important historical materials relating to the development of science, scientific institutions and scholarly networks. Researchers may use the grant to undertake focused archival work where access to original collections would make a meaningful contribution to their research.
The scheme places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary projects. Relevant subjects include intellectual history, cultural history, history of science, philosophy of science, history of art and historical geography. The Royal Society also notes a particular interest in Early Modern science and European networks of the period.
Who Can Apply
The scheme is open to:
- Doctoral candidates who are at least one year into their thesis.
- Early-career researchers who completed their PhD within the last 10 years.
- Researchers in early-career positions at universities or other eligible accredited organisations, including relevant museums or galleries.
- Applicants who hold a post, fellowship or doctoral position at a university or not-for-profit organisation that can act as their host organisation and guarantor.
Applications from both UK-based and international researchers are welcomed.
Researchers who completed their PhD more than 10 years ago may still be considered where they are in an early-career position following a career break, subject to the full scheme conditions.
