About This Fellowship
The Princeton Fung Global Fellows Program is an international academic fellowship that provides an opportunity for early-career scholars from around the world to spend an academic year in residence at Princeton University and pursue research connected with the programme's annual intellectual theme.
The programme is designed to bring together scholars from different countries, academic disciplines and intellectual traditions. Through an international community of fellows, the programme encourages researchers to examine important global questions from multiple perspectives and to engage in sustained academic exchange.
During their period of residence, fellows pursue their individual research projects while participating in seminars, discussions, workshops and other intellectual activities associated with the programme. The combination of independent research and collective academic engagement allows fellows to develop their research while benefiting from interaction with scholars working in different fields.
For the 2027–2028 academic year, the programme's intellectual theme focuses on "Democracy in Crisis." This theme provides a broad framework for examining contemporary and historical questions concerning democratic institutions, political participation, governance, citizenship, political representation, social change and other issues affecting democratic societies.
Scholars whose research addresses important questions surrounding democracy and its institutions may therefore find this fellowship particularly relevant. The theme can potentially accommodate research from several disciplines, including political science, history, sociology, international relations, development studies and related areas of the social sciences and humanities.
The theme is not limited to the study of political institutions alone. Research may examine the social, economic, historical, cultural and institutional factors that influence democratic systems and political participation. Applicants should, however, carefully demonstrate how their proposed research connects meaningfully with the specific annual theme.
The fellowship provides an opportunity for scholars to become part of Princeton University's academic environment for the duration of the fellowship. Fellows can interact with Princeton faculty members, researchers and other scholars while continuing to develop their own research projects.
This environment can encourage interdisciplinary intellectual exchange. A scholar studying democracy from a political science perspective, for example, may benefit from discussions with researchers working in history, sociology, economics, international relations or other related fields.
For early-career scholars, this type of international academic environment can be particularly valuable. It can provide an opportunity to refine research ideas, receive feedback from scholars outside one's immediate research network, develop new academic connections and explore possible areas of collaboration.
The programme is also intended to contribute to the development of an international community of scholars. Fellows bring their own geographical experiences, academic traditions and research perspectives to the programme, creating opportunities for participants to learn from one another.
