About This Fellowship
The I Tatti Berenson Fellowship is a residential research fellowship for scholars whose work examines the Italian Renaissance through its connections with other parts of the world.
The fellowship is based at Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence. It supports research into the Renaissance broadly understood as the period from the 14th through the 17th centuries, with particular emphasis on projects exploring transnational exchanges and relationships between Italy and other cultures.
The programme's distinctive focus is described by I Tatti as "Italy in the World." This means that proposed research should go beyond a narrowly Italy-centred study and investigate dialogues, exchanges, movements of ideas, people, objects, artistic practices, texts or knowledge between Italy and other regions.
The fellowship welcomes research involving connections between Italy and regions such as Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean and Latin America.
Eligible scholars can work across the principal fields supported by I Tatti, including architecture and the arts, history, philosophy, literature, music and history of science.
Up to four Berenson Fellowships are awarded each year. Fellows spend either four or six months in residence at I Tatti, where they receive dedicated time for research while becoming part of an international scholarly community.
The residential structure is designed to minimise outside obligations and provide researchers with sustained access to specialised academic resources. Fellows are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Harvard Center through conferences, lectures, concerts and other activities.
