About This Fellowship
The Hoover Institution Fellows Program offers early-career scholars the opportunity to conduct research at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University while contributing to its intellectual community and producing scholarship with potential public-policy implications.
The programme is intended for outstanding scholars whose research is relevant to Hoover's areas of interest, including economics, history, international relations, national security, political science and public policy.
Unlike a conventional university scholarship, the Hoover Fellows position is an academic appointment rather than funding for a degree programme. Fellows are expected to devote their appointment primarily to research and scholarly publication. The position carries no teaching responsibilities, allowing Fellows to concentrate on developing their research, publishing academic work and engaging with researchers at Hoover and Stanford.
Appointments are normally for one to three years. The position is based at the Hoover Institution on Stanford University's campus in California.
During the fellowship, scholars are expected to produce scholarly articles and books that have implications for public policy. Fellows also participate in the intellectual life of the Hoover Institution and are encouraged to engage with Stanford's wider research community.
This makes the programme particularly relevant to researchers who already have a strong academic foundation and want dedicated time, institutional resources and a policy-oriented research environment to develop substantial scholarly work.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful Hoover Fellows receive:
- A full-time research appointment at the Hoover Institution.
- A term of appointment ranging from one to three years.
- A 12-month base salary of US$169,950 to US$230,000, depending on the appointment and qualifications.
- A US$20,000 annual housing allowance.
- No teaching responsibilities.
- Access to the intellectual environment of Hoover Institution and Stanford University.
- Opportunities to engage with scholars and researchers across Stanford.
- Time to develop scholarly articles, books and other research outputs.
- Access to Hoover's research resources and academic community.
The salary and housing allowance make this substantially different from a conventional fellowship that simply provides a monthly stipend.
