About This Fellowship
The AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF) place scientists and engineers in policy environments where they can contribute technical expertise to real-world government decision-making.
Rather than functioning as a conventional academic fellowship, STPF is designed as a professional transition between scientific or engineering work and public policy. Fellows work with federal government offices and other policy organisations, gaining first-hand experience of how scientific evidence is considered when policies and programmes are developed.
The 2027–2028 fellowship year begins on September 1, 2027 and ends on August 31, 2028.
Fellowship Areas
Applicants can apply to up to two AAAS fellowship areas. The programme includes placements in:
- Executive branch agencies
- Legislative branch offices
- The judicial branch
- Selected non-governmental organisations through the Pathways to Policy Fellowship
The available placement depends on the fellowship area and the needs of participating offices.
Fellows may work on issues that connect science and technology with areas such as environmental policy, health, energy, education, technology, research, national programmes and other public-policy challenges.
What Fellows Do
The fellowship is intended for people who want to use their scientific or technical expertise outside a conventional research role.
Depending on the placement, a fellow may contribute to policy analysis, research, programme development, scientific communication, briefings, stakeholder engagement or other activities relevant to the host office.
The exact duties are not identical for every fellow because placements are matched to the fellow's expertise and the needs of the host organisation.
This means applicants should be prepared to work on policy questions that may extend beyond their narrow research specialisation.
Funding and Benefits
AAAS provides fellows with a stipend during the fellowship year.
In addition to financial support, fellows receive:
- A year-long professional development programme
- Policy and leadership development opportunities
- Access to the AAAS fellowship network
- Opportunities to develop science communication skills
- Exposure to federal policymaking
- Professional connections with policymakers and other science and engineering professionals
The fellowship is therefore more than a research award: its principal purpose is to develop scientists and engineers who can communicate technical evidence and contribute effectively to policy.
Eligibility
The main AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship route has strict eligibility requirements.
