About This Fellowship
The Wilson Center Research Fellowship offers an opportunity for outstanding researchers, scholars and policy-oriented professionals to undertake independent research in Washington, D.C., while becoming part of an international community of experts working on major issues affecting the United States and the wider world. The 2027–2028 Research Fellowship is designed for researchers who have a well-developed research project and are prepared to spend a significant period developing that project within a highly interactive policy and research environment.
The fellowship is particularly suitable for researchers whose work addresses important public-policy questions and whose research can contribute to a deeper understanding of major international, political, economic, social, environmental or historical issues. Rather than simply providing financial support for an academic degree, the programme is structured around an individual research project. Successful fellows are expected to use the fellowship period to conduct substantial research, develop their findings and contribute intellectually to the wider Wilson Center community.
The Wilson Center is based in Washington, D.C., and its location provides fellows with access to a major international policy environment. Researchers can benefit from being situated in a city where universities, government institutions, international organizations, research institutes, embassies, policy organizations and other knowledge institutions are concentrated. This environment can be particularly valuable for researchers whose projects require interaction with policy experts, access to specialized resources or engagement with current international affairs.
Applicants are expected to propose a clearly defined research project. The project should demonstrate why the research is important, what questions it intends to address and how the proposed work will contribute to existing knowledge or policy discussions. A strong application therefore needs to go beyond simply describing a general academic interest. Applicants should explain the problem they want to investigate, the approach they intend to use and the significance of the expected findings.
The fellowship can be particularly valuable for researchers who want their work to reach audiences beyond traditional academic journals. The Wilson Center has a strong policy orientation, meaning fellows can develop research that connects academic knowledge with real-world policy questions. This can help researchers strengthen their ability to communicate complex research findings to policymakers, practitioners, journalists, organizations and other non-specialist audiences.
