About This Fellowship
The TWAS Research Professors in Least Developed Countries Programme is an international scientific collaboration initiative administered by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Its purpose is to strengthen scientific capacity in Least Developed Countries by connecting local research institutions with experienced scientists from the TWAS network.
The programme enables eligible research groups and scientific institutions to invite qualified TWAS Members and TWAS Young Affiliates or Alumni to contribute their expertise through collaborative research, advanced training and academic exchange. Rather than being a conventional degree scholarship, it is a visiting-professor programme focused on strengthening the host institution's research activities and developing longer-term scientific relationships.
Duration and structure
A successful appointment lasts for one year. During that period, the visiting Research Professor is expected to spend between two and four weeks at the host institution. The visit may involve collaborative research, supporting existing scientific activities, developing new research directions, mentoring researchers and postgraduate students, and delivering topical lectures or seminars.
The programme is designed to create benefits that extend beyond the visit itself. By connecting local researchers with established scientists, it aims to strengthen institutional expertise and help build sustainable research collaborations.
Funding and support
TWAS provides round-trip economy-class travel, additional travel expenses incurred by the visiting professor and an honorarium. The host institution is expected to cover local expenses associated with the visit.
The official programme announcement does not state a fixed cash award or a standard total funding amount. Prospective host institutions should therefore assess their own responsibilities for local expenses before submitting a request and clarify any practical arrangements with the invited professor.
Who is eligible?
The programme has two distinct eligibility requirements:
- The visiting scientist: must be a TWAS Member/Fellow or a TWAS Young Affiliate or Alumnus. A PhD is the stated minimum degree, and the programme focuses on natural sciences.
- The host applicant: must be a research group or scientific institution located in a United Nations-designated Least Developed Country.
This distinction is important: the programme is not an open individual fellowship for any researcher who wishes to travel abroad. The institutional request and the eligibility of the proposed visiting scientist are both central to the process.
