About This Fellowship
The Bodleian Visiting Fellowships in Special Collections are research awards offered by the Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford. They support scholars whose projects require access to the libraries' distinctive archival, manuscript and printed-book collections, many of which are held at the Weston Library in Oxford.
The 2027–28 call invites researchers from outside the University of Oxford to pursue their own research projects using these materials. The programme is particularly relevant to scholars who can demonstrate that consulting specific Bodleian items will materially advance their research in ways that cannot easily be achieved through ordinary library access or online resources alone.
Unlike a conventional degree scholarship, the fellowship supports a focused period of independent research. It does not provide admission to an Oxford degree programme or constitute employment at the University.
Funding and duration
Unless a particular award specifies otherwise, eligible research visits may receive funding of up to £2,200 per month. Visits must last at least one month, and the precise amount awarded depends on the fellowship terms and eligible costs.
The fellowship year runs from 1 August to 31 July. Proposed visit dates must be agreed with the Bodleian Libraries. Applicants should state their preferred dates in the application and consider Oxford's academic calendar where relevant.
The published monthly figure should not be interpreted as a guaranteed unrestricted stipend. Depending on the payment method and the recipient's UK tax status, the award may be subject to UK tax and National Insurance, reducing the amount actually received.
Research areas and named fellowships
The programme includes several named fellowships linked to particular collections and scholarly disciplines. These include:
- African Studies Visiting Fellowship: supports research into the history of Sub-Saharan Africa using the Bodleian's African and Commonwealth archives. Relevant materials include collections concerning colonial history, agriculture, education, medicine, engineering, missionary activity and anti-apartheid movements. Applicants must currently be affiliated with a university in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Albi Rosenthal Visiting Fellowship in Music: supports research using the Bodleian's music collections, including printed music and music manuscripts.
- Ann Ball Bodley Visiting Fellowship in Women's History: supports research in women's history across geographical areas and historical periods.
- Bahari Visiting Fellowship in the Persian Arts of the Book: supports research using the Bodleian's Persian and Islamic Collections. Applicants must include an article-length sample of their written work.
- Byrne-Bussey Marconi Visiting Fellowship in the History of Science, Technology and Communication: supports research using relevant archives, manuscripts, objects and rare books, including work on wireless communication and the wireless industry.
