About This Fellowship
The 2026 Top-Up Marco Fanno & Foscolo Europe Fellowships are a research and academic recruitment initiative organised by UniCredit Foundation to help eligible European university departments and research institutes attract and retain outstanding young researchers in Economics and Finance.
Unlike a conventional individual fellowship or scholarship, the programme is structured as a salary top-up connected to the recruitment of an outstanding early-career researcher. The application is therefore made by an eligible academic department or research institute rather than by a student or researcher applying independently for personal funding.
For the 2026 edition, UniCredit Foundation will award seven Top-Up Fellowships: two Marco Fanno Fellowships and five Ugo Foscolo Fellowships. Each fellowship has a total value of €150,000 and lasts for three years. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
The purpose of the top-up is to allow participating institutions to offer more internationally competitive remuneration packages when recruiting promising economists and finance researchers at an early stage of their academic careers.
The programme is specifically aimed at researchers who have recently obtained a PhD in Economics or Finance. Participating institutions are expected to identify candidates through recognised and internationally competitive recruitment processes, including major academic job markets for PhD graduates and comparable European placement programmes. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
The fellowship can support recruitment into positions such as postdoctoral and tenure-track roles. Institutions must use rigorous and transparent procedures when evaluating candidates and selecting the researcher who will benefit from the top-up.
For individual researchers, the opportunity therefore arises primarily through an eligible academic recruitment process. A researcher does not simply submit a personal scholarship application to UniCredit Foundation. Instead, an eligible university department or research institute identifies and recruits the candidate and submits the fellowship application in accordance with the programme requirements.
The programme is particularly relevant to European universities and research institutes seeking to strengthen their economics or finance research teams while competing internationally for high-quality early-career academic talent.
