About This Course and Training
The International Society for Respiratory Viruses (ISRV) is organizing the 8th ISRV School of Respiratory Viruses from 10–14 May 2027 in Accra, Ghana. Hosted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana, this five-day programme will focus on preparing Africa for the next generation of respiratory virus threats.
The School is designed to support early-career researchers and professionals seeking to develop their knowledge and practical understanding of respiratory virus research, clinical care, disease surveillance and public health preparedness. It will bring together participants and experts from Africa and internationally for scientific learning, professional development and collaboration.
What Will Participants Learn?
The programme is expected to address several areas relevant to respiratory virus research and public health, including:
- Respiratory virus epidemiology and global disease burden.
- Disease surveillance, early warning systems and outbreak response.
- Laboratory systems, diagnostic methods and One Health approaches.
- Vaccines, immunisation and implementation.
- Clinical research and public health responses to respiratory viruses.
- Digital health, data science and innovation.
- Evidence-informed policy and decision-making.
- Pandemic and epidemic preparedness.
- Professional development, mentoring and scientific networking.
Activities are expected to include lectures, interactive sessions, practical learning, case studies, group work and networking. The detailed programme and confirmed faculty will be announced by the organizers.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
The School is intended primarily for early-career researchers and professionals working or studying in respiratory viruses or related fields.
Eligible applicants may include:
- PhD and other doctoral students.
- Postdoctoral researchers and research scientists.
- Final-year Master’s students whose studies are relevant to the School.

ISRV defines an Early Career Researcher or Professional as someone within eight years’ whole-time equivalent of completing their highest degree, with appropriate allowances for career breaks, parental leave, caring responsibilities and part-time work.
Applicants do not necessarily need to specialize in respiratory viruses already, but they should have a relevant background and explain how attending would support their current or future work. Applications from all regions are welcome, with particular encouragement for applicants based in Africa.
