About This Conference
The Seismological Society of America (SSA) offers several travel grants to help students, early-career researchers and international seismologists participate in its 2027 Annual Meeting in Seattle.
The Annual Meeting brings together researchers and professionals working across earthquake science and related areas, providing opportunities to present research, receive feedback, meet researchers from different institutions and develop professional connections within the seismological community.
For 2027, SSA is offering five categories of travel support: Student Travel Grants, Early-Career Grants, International Travel Grants, ESC/SSA Travel Grants, and Domestic Regular Members Travel Grants. Applicants should apply under the category that matches their career stage and travel circumstances rather than submitting applications to multiple categories.
The funding is particularly valuable for researchers who have scientific work to present but would otherwise face difficulty meeting the cost of attending an international research conference.
What the Funding Provides
SSA travel grants include:
- Complimentary registration for the 2027 Annual Meeting.
- Financial support toward travel, lodging and meals.
- Up to US$3,000 may be requested by applicants travelling internationally.
- Up to US$2,000 may be requested by applicants travelling within North America.
The award is a travel grant rather than an unlimited reimbursement. The amount requested is subject to SSA's available funding and the competitiveness of the application, so applicants should not assume that they will automatically receive the maximum amount.
Grant Categories
Student Travel Grant
Available to SSA student members travelling from inside or outside the United States. Student applicants must meet SSA's travel requirements and present their research at the meeting.
Early-Career Grant
Designed for SSA members in good standing who are within six years of their terminal degree. This category is intended for researchers who are beyond the student stage but are still within the early part of their professional research careers.
International Travel Grant
Available to eligible SSA members who are not U.S. residents and are six years or more beyond their terminal degree. Students and early-career researchers who meet the relevant criteria should apply through their respective student or early-career categories instead.
ESC/SSA Travel Grant
Available to applicants travelling from a member state of the European Seismological Commission (ESC). Unlike the other categories, active SSA membership is not required for this particular grant.
